Perhaps the most famous use of the spruce tree is as a Christmas tree. Evergreens are inherently healing and magical, their beauty, life force, and vitality is effortless and strong in the coldest, darkest and longest of winters. It is the remarkable resilience and strength of the spruce tree that lends it the power to thrive during the coldest, most inhospitable months. This can be sensed by a long, deep inhale in the middle of an evergreen forest (or a Christmas time living room), invigorating, stimulating, purifying and grounding all at once. Evergreens weave together the magic of Yule & the Winter Solstice, the magic of Nature, and the spirit of Christ, consciousness, grace and unconditional love. And for those raised with Christmas, evergreens connect with the enchanting magic of childhood possibility.

The ancient Greeks associated spruce with Artemis, the goddess of the moon, hunting, nature and protector of women.

Spruce trees are also used as a clan symbol in some Native American cultures. Tribes with spruce clans include the Hopi tribe, whose spruce clan is named Salab. The Cherokee also have a Winter Spruce Dance among their tribal dance traditions.

The spirit of the spruce tree holds great knowledge about healing, especially in relation to the metaphysical causes of disease. Its spirit is gentle, it is not unusual for those who attune to the spirit of spruce to find that there follows an increase in animals within that environment.

In a magical sense, the spirit of spruce has been traditionally called upon as a protector, aiding those who are on a spiritual path where healing, ceremony and ritual all require a secure, safe sacred space. It is also called on for spiritual/energetic protection for individuals who deal with serious illnesses, dark spirits, entities, or negative energies, such as ceremonial leaders, healers, and medicine people.

When used as an example, it encourages people to be strong and resistant to anything despite the challenges they face in life.

Magical properties: ancient wisdom, goddess energy, healing, protection, purification, spiritual refreshment, longevity, endurance, resilience, ancient wisdom, Mother Earth, and spiritual renewal.

Burn spruce needles or pieces of bark to stimulate psychic abilities, especially for channeling. Spruce helps develop intuition, as well as the ability to discern when to act on it.

Use the needles or cones to connect with the energy of forest spirits. Place a sprig of needles on your altar to aid in deepening spirituality or strengthening trust. After ritual or magic work, hold a spruce cone between your palms to ground and stabilize energy. Hang a spruce bough anywhere in the home for protection. The needles and cones can also be used to raise energy in healing circles.
