PINE

From its lofty position above the tops of most other trees, the pine reminded ancient peoples of the importance of taking the overview, encouraging objectivity and farsightedness. We are advised to cleanse ourselves of negativity, neither dwelling on mistakes or passing blame. Pine is a symbol of the elevated mind and the birth of the spiritual warrior. Pine is an extremely long-living tree which is held in great esteem by many cultures, and it is often associated with longevity because its leaves remain green all year round and it also has an extremely long lifespan. It’s said to bring luck and joy with it, so if you feel like you’re lacking in both those things, take a pine branch and hang it over the entry way of your home. The pine tree represents rebirth, immortality, and strength in adversity, overcoming hardships through optimism and inner strength.

Pine is one of the Three Friends of Winter, Suihan Sanyou or shōchikubai (together with bamboo and plum) in Chinese tradition. They symbolize steadfastness, perseverance and resilience, virtues of the gentleman scholar according to Confucian ideals and are popular subjects of Chinese art.

The symbolic Iroquois 'Tree of Peace' is a northern white pine. To the Iroquois people, the white pine is a symbol of the Great Peace that united their separate nations into an enduring League. The Peace Tree is related to the Tree of Light, a central symbol in Iroquois cosmology. Similar mythological trees are found in European traditions, including Norse, and Christian. Among the ancient Mayan people, the pine also had cosmological attributes, such that pine wood was an important commodity traded to build temples and to replenish ritual paraphernalia. Pine charcoal was preferred over other material for torches used in ceremonies. The act of burning pine represented an offering of sacred food to deities, which emphasizes the spiritual qualities attributed to these trees.

In some areas pine was used to build coffins for the dead.

Pine is one of the Celtic Ogham woods.

Witches wield pine wands because it is the most common wood available at craft and hardware stores. Pine does not make the most durable or powerful wand possible, instead, it is a wood that rewards creativity and spontaneity with its low cost and flexible energy. Seeks a companion with good intentions, a healer and protector.

Pine cones represent masculinity (even though they are essentially the womb of the tree) and fertility and may be used to tip wands and staves. Pine cones ward away negative energy and provide protection

A good magical cleansing and stimulating bath is made by placing pine needles in a loose-woven bag and running bath water over it.

To purify and sanctify an outdoor ritual area, brush the ground with a pine branch. Use a pine branch like a broom to brush away negative energy from your home or from surfaces (like your altar) and objects.

Floor washes with pine oil cleanse a space of negativity and ward off illness. Use pine oil in your wash water to wash away troubles that have been disturbing your household, including illness or just general doldrums.

Throw pine needles into winter fires for protection, or burn pine incense for purification and divination.

Place pine branches over the bed to keep sickness away, or to aid the ill. Hang a pine branch over the main door of your house to ensure continuous joy within.

Meditate under a pine tree or walk through a pine forest to get a new perspective on a situation and emerge with a renewed sense of purpose.

Pine incense is made of pine resin and is traditionally burned in the winter to clear negative energy and lift the spirit. It is stimulating and encourages optimism. Pine incense can be burned during reversal spells designed to turn a negative spell into a positive one. Pine can be burned for general healing, (physical, emotional, mental and spiritual,) for grounding and general strength.

Pine resin can be used as a substitute for copal or combined with it for a powerful purifying incense. Combined with camphor, it can be used to aid exorcism operations.
